Welcome to Polars and South Central Freeze Hockey

MISSION & HISTORY

Reedsburg Youth Hockey Association was founded in 1971. In 1986 RYHA (Reedsburg Youth Hockey Association) built RACA (Reedsburg Area Community Arena) with major funds from the Nishan Trust and money solicited by RYHA. Membership in RYHA in 1972 was 35, in 1996 it was 112, 1999 was 108 and the 2000-2001 season was 117. This does not include the junior varsity or varsity high school participants.
The purpose of the program is to teach and improve ice hockey in the Reedsburg area, to allow any interested youth an equal opportunity to participate and to provide an enjoyable learning experience of hockey, sportsmanship, team effort and dedication.
RYHA is a member of the Wisconsin-Minnesota Hockey League (WMHL), the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA), the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) and USA Hockey.

While the 2007-2008 hockey season has come to an end, four skater with ties to Reedsburg have earned invitations to the WAHA Midget and Girl Festivals. Matt Lennon of Reedsburg who skates with the Madison Capitals earned an invitation to the WAHA Midget Festival. The WAHA Midget Festival will be held April 12th and 13th.

WAHA held tryouts for girls to make one of two teams (93/94 team or 90/91/92 team) depending on the year the players were born. The tryouts were held at five different locations (Green Bay, Verona, Stevens Point, Eau Claire and Fond du Lac). The tryouts lasted 90 minutes for each team. Each age group has a total of six teams to run a tournament on April 19th and 20th in Fond du Lac.

Autumn Pace (freshman from RAHS) and Tesa Barney (freshman from Wisconsin Dells), members of the the Freeze Varsity team, both made the 93/94 team. Autumn will play for the Teal squad and Tesa will be playing for the White squad. While their teammate from the Freeze, Caitlin Scanlon (junior of RAHS) made the 90/91/92 team and will play for the Gold squad. Two players, Amanda Reimann and Ayla Jacobsen, from the Badger Thunder (Baraboo Co-op) made the 90/91/92 teams, too. Eight skaters from the WHCA All-State team will be playing on the 90/91/92 teams.

Reedsburg Bantam and Peewee Teams Complete Season
2008-03-18 11:46:47

This past weekend saw the Reedsburg Polar Peewee and Bantam teams complete their seasons by competing in the Ultimate Tournaments final tournament of the 2007-2008 season. Both teams ended the season on a winning note.
The Peewee team started the weekend playing at 4:50 PM on Friday, March 15th. The peewees defeated a team from Waterloo, Iowa 3-1. The next game for the peewees was Saturday at 11:00 AM. Once again the Polars were playing a team from Iowa, but this time they lost to Cedar Rapids 5-1. Reedsburg played again on Saturday at 5:45 PM. They took on Beaver Dam but fell 4-1. The Polars finished the season on Sunday. They took on the Geneva Cyclones and defeated them 6-1.
The Reedsburg Polar Bantam team took on the Winona Winhawks on Friday at 7:10 PM. Reedsburg won this game 5-0. Reedsburg next took on Rochester at 9:35 PM on Friday night, but the first game took its toll and the bantams lost 5-0. Saturday, March 16th, at 12:50 PM Reedsburg took on the Ironwood Polar Bears, but lost 5-2. Then at 7:45 PM Reedsburg played Wadena. Wadena took an early lead, but Reedsburg fought back to make it 3-2 late in the game. Wadena added another goal halfway through the third period, but the Polars would not quit and scored a goal with to make it 4-3. However, the clock was as big an enemy as the score and the bantams ran out of time despite the pressure they applied on the Wadena netminder. The Polars had one game left, a rematch against the Ironwood Polar Bears. This time Reedsburg came out on top with a 5-2 victory to complete their 2007-2008 season.

South Central Freeze Awards Banquet
Del Scanlon
2008-02-25 22:36:05

On Friday, February 15th, the South Central Freeze saw their season come to an end whe they lost their Regional playoff game 3-0 to the Badger Thunder. Monday, February 25th, the Freeze concluded their season with the End of the Season Awards Dinner at Moose Jaw in Lake Delton. The players, coaches and families enjoyed dinner and the company of friends.
Once dinner completed, the business of distributing awards was begun. The following is a list of the awards and their winners for the 2007-2008 season.

Hobey Baker Award
The awards portion started with the playing of a dvd explaining the Hobey Baker High School Character Award.
The award is given in recognition of exemplary character and sportsmanship.

Team MVP
Ellie Arkin

The players were reminded about the summer ice that was being made available (for the girls in the South Central Freeze youth program through high school) at Poppy Waterman Ice Arena in Lake Delton. This year the program will run for ten weeks and will meet a total of 17 times. Also, they were told there would be off-ice work being made available to work on their stickhandling skills. It was mentioned how the younger girls look up and want to be the girls playing high school hockey.
This season saw two more of the girls, Ellie Arkin and Brittany Bruun, graduating from high school that were on the original all-girl hockey team in Reedsburg. This leaves four girls on the current team that were on the original team, Caitlin Scanlon, Leah Jurgensen, Jade Clement and Molly Albert (I forgot to mention Molly at the banquet for which I am deeply sorry). These girls have already cemented their place in Reedsburg hockey history and it is through the work they and their teammates that girls hockey will continue to thrive in the area.
Once again, we would like to say Thank you to all the coaches and players for their hard work this season.
Reedsburg Polar Squirts take 2nd Place in Home Tournament
Kristi Brown
2008-02-25 10:14:03

Last weekend the Polar Squirts hosted a six team tournament. Reedsburg, New Richmond and Dodgeville were in one bracket and Waupun, West Salem and Monroe were in the second bracket. Reedsburg played Dodgeville in their first game and won 6-3. Then Saturday night they played New Richmond and Michael “Sprinkles” Olson had a shut out with a Polar win 5-0. With 2 wins on Saturday, the Polars were able to make it to the championship round to face Waupun on Sunday for the final game of the tournament. Waupun was well deserving of the first place trophy and Reedsburg took second place after a difficult game against Waupun. During the weekend there was also a shoot out tournament between all six teams. The Polars took first place in the shoot out tournament earning themselves another trophy. A huge thank you to Wendy Bill and Tracy Jones who did an excellent job of organizing and running the tournament. Also thank you to our wonderful head coach Ken Olson and assistant coaches Matt Sakry, Rick Cummins and Jim Brown.
